A blustery but fine day saw
a memorable 40-over match at
Central Park
marking the Club’s 100 years, with the result being decided only in
the final over of the game.
The Welsh Club
Cricket Conference did Llantwit Fardre proud, by fielding a League side
chosen from a number of clubs that was both well-matched with our own,
and kitted out in smart commemorative shirts and caps for the occasion.
The League’s 2nd XI batted first and reached 191 for 6. They
were mostly indebted to their opening batsmen K. Redford (66) and Steve
Clarke (53) for the runs. The best of the home bowlers was
teenager Scott Williams, whose off-spin reaped a deserved 3 for 43.
The Llantwit
response began reasonably, but floundered to a perilous 68 for 6 halfway
through the allotted overs, through a mixture of incisive bowling, poor
shot selection and controversial umpiring decisions. But the true
nature of the placid track and fast outfield was shown by the seventh
wicket pair of Stuart Clarke and Steve Smith who, without taking
unnecessary risks, kept Llantwit in the match as they chipped away at
the target. With 3 overs left there were 25 needed to win and
still four wickets to fall, but unfortunately both Stuart Clarke (58)
and Steve Smith (35) perished in the final run chase, and the home
innings ended on 187 for 9, tantalisingly close to a notable victory.
Five of the League selection’s bowlers shared the wicket haul.
Man of the match
was Stuart Clarke, for his near-match winning innings. We would
like to thank Clive Franklin (St. Fagan’s) for captaining the League
side, and all those who contributed to a pleasant day’s cricket.
