Llantwit Fardre played in two outstanding games at
the weekend, narrowingly losing in the first eleven whilst the second
eleven recorded their first win of the season.
At Central Park Llantwit Fardre batted first
against Creigiau and after a wobly start pushed on to an impressive
211-5. Ceri Sweeney (116no) was once again in impressive form and when
he was joined by allrounder Chris Garwood (55no) the score accelarated
on a good pitch and a fast outfield.
This looked a good score as Creigiau made a slow
start with Phil Jones (1-19) tying down the early batsmen. Creigiau were
falling behind the rate as they meandered along but stuck in there with
Mike Powell being particularly obstinate. They picked up the rate and
Powell suffered an injury requiring a runner. With two speedy runners
and an injured batsman stroking away the scores became closer with
10 required off the last over. Mike Powell went for it and was dropped
on the boundary off the first ball, getting a four and then he smashed
the last but one ball over the boundary to secure a victory and achieve
his century with the same stroke. A truly remarkable innings. Huw Thomas
bowled well for Llantwit with 3-21.
The second eleven played away at Abercarn and
recorded their best score of the season with 185. Nick Hughes (56),
Steve Smith (32 no), Steve Thomas (31), Matthew John (27) and James
Guile (23) were the impressive batsmen. Abercarn were dismissed for 114
by Steve John (2-1), Scott Williams (2-21), Steve Clarke (2-23) and Rhys
Williams (2-23) in a very impressive first win of the season.
