The
first match this summer at
Central Park
saw the visit of local rivals Hopkinstown.
A delayed start reduced this 1st XI fixture to 38
overs a side, with Hopkinstown batting first.
There were some useful contributions from Hopkins (36), Price
(31), and Kember (30), but the home side’s bowling kept plugging away
and restricted them to 187 all out.
Best analyses for Llantwit were Marcus Caudle 3-23, Chris Garwood
2-30, and Steve Smith 2-40.
There
was a steady riposte from Llantwit, which saw them reach 188 for 5 with
one over to spare. Geraint
Lewis (38) was a solid contributor, but it was Neil Pike (37*) and
especially Mike Cannon (59*) that guided the side home to a five wicket
victory. Another set of
maximum league points sees Llantwit Fardre on top of the division at
this early stage of the season, which augurs well for this Centenary
summer.
The equivalent 2nd XI match was played a few miles up the
road, and was also reduced to 40 overs a side. Hopkinstown
were asked to bat first on losing the toss, and reached 207 all out in
the last over of their innings. No
batsman totally dominated matters, but a middle order mini-collapse was
steadied by some good hitting from captain Spencer towards the end.
Steve John (4-57) and Alan Hughes (3-31) were the pick of the
Llantwit bowlers.
In
reply, the Llantwit batters gave a reasonable account of themselves on
their first outing of the summer, but in the end fell well short of the
target and were bowled out for 152.
Rob Blunt scored freely for his 43, and there were promising
contributions from youngsters Arwel Parry and Steve Clarke, but in the
end it was defeat by 55 runs.
