The
opening match of the WCCC League season pitted the 2 relegated teams
from the previous summer’s 1st division against each other.
Abercarn won the toss and inserted Llantwit Fardre on a real
green top. The only player
showing the technique to cope with the batsman-unfriendly early season
conditions was opener Stuart Clarke, who was last out for a combative
44. Inexcusably, extras were
the only other contributor in double figures, and the team was dismissed
for a sub-standard 86 all out. With
bonus batting points starting from innings of 100 runs upwards this
season, this was a disappointingly pointless batting display.
Steve
John (last season’s top wicket-taker in the division) started up where
he left off with a haul of 4 for 14, but Abercarn got their required 87
runs for the loss of 6 wickets. Llantwit
Fardre thus began their campaign with a mere 3 bowling points, and need
to show greater batting backbone if they are to feature seriously in the
promotion hunt this summer.
