The
first match of the summer at
Central Park
saw the Second XI putting out a very inexperienced side, due to absences
and late calls from the 1st XI.
Fielding first, the only Llantwit bowler who kept the visiting
batsmen in check was Steve John, skipper for the day, with 1-20 off 10
overs. Without
ever letting loose, Monkswood nevertheless progressed smoothly against
an otherwise largely inexperienced attack, and finished on 206 for 4
from 45 overs.
The
home team’s response was an improvement on the capitulation of the
previous Saturday, and two batting points were secured in a total of 130
all out.
Stephen Thomas (42), Nicky Hughes (28) and Ross Williams (also
28) secured a solid performance from the top half of the batting order,
but wickets fell steadily and cheaply towards the innings end.
A 76-run defeat was a clear-cut result, but the prevailing
feeling was that the team had performed creditably given its reduced
circumstances.
