In
an oasis of sunshine on a very wet day Llantwit won the toss and decided
to bat and this proved to be an inspired decision .
Matthew
Walsh and Stuart Clarke tore into the opening bowling and after 11 overs
they were 66 without loss.
They
then lost 2 wickets off the final ball of the 11th over and the first
ball of the following over with Stuart Clarke going for 18 and Nicky
Hughes getting an unplayable first ball duck.
Matthew
Walsh was joined at the wicket by Scott Williams but this partnership
was broken in the 15th over when Matthew was bowled for an excellent 44,
with the score on 77 Scott was joined by Johnny Ball and after a
controlled start they began to set about the home bowling.
Scott
Williams reached his first ever 50 at any level of cricket with two
excellent straightly driven fours, this seemed to spur both batsmen on.
Johnny
Ball began to up the run rate and with Scott finding the boundaries
at regular intervals the score was taken on to 212 with Johnny Ball being
caught off the final ball for 39 with Scott Williams remaining
unbeaten for a best ever 92 not out including 13 fours (oh for a
couple of extra overs) a stand of 135 off 30 overs.
Llantwit
Major's reply started badly with Steve Smith taking a wicket in the
first over but the rain finally set in and the players came off after 3
overs.
After
an hour's delay play resumed on a very slippery surface this forced the
early introduction of both spinners Stevie John and Scott Williams.
This
proved to be a match winning decision as they bowled with great
precision and thought, supported by some great fielding and
catching after their spell of 10 overs each they had reduced the home
side to 64 for 8 with Stevie John returning figures of 10-0-32-3 and
Scott Williams returning figures of 10-4-16-4.
With
the rain threatening to spoil the party again the remaining wickets
were taken by Steve Smith who finished with 2 with Johnny Ball
taking the final wicket, Llantwit Major ending on 69 all out off 28
overs.
This
was an excellent first win of the season and hopefully with the
blend of youth and experience now beginning to gel they can go to
more wins during the season.
